CWA Local 14922 has seen their membership nearly double in size in the past year as four new shops were organized by Gary Ayers, Local 14922 president, with the assistance of Printing, Publishing and Media Workers Sector President Dan Wasser.
The four new shops, Royal Printing, Creative Digital Printing, AA Printing Service and Valley Press of Las Vegas, added more than 30 new members to the roles of the Local. “We are a small local, located in a right-to-work state,” said Ayers. “We had about 55 members previously, but with the addition of these new shops, we will now have over 90.”
Although Nevada is a right-to-work state, it has strong union density, especially in the city of Las Vegas. The Culinary Union has some 60,000 members and the Service Employees International Union has about 50,000. As well, the area is experiencing a construction resurgence which is expected to bring in nearly 10,000 new potential union members for the building trades unions in the area. For these newly unionized print shops, being able to offer the union bug to their customers will open opportunities to print for large local unions that were previously unavailable. As well, the shops should see additional political print work as the mid-term elections heat up both locally and nationally.
For out of town visitors, especially the unions that hold meetings and conventions in Las Vegas, access to more union print shops should help with cost cutting, as many unions have items shipped in for their events.
Most of the newly organized shops have been around for a number of years. Royal Printing is owned by John and Mike Morrello and has been in business since April 1989. The shop started with nothing more than a two-color press, which John and Mike say was operated by them and a few of their friends in the beginning. They added more equipment over the next few years, and moved a couple of times before landing on the famed Las Vegas Strip.
The Morrello’s website boast that most of their employees have been with them for more than a decade. Their addition to PPMWS will add 17 new members to the Local.
Like Royal Printing, Creative Digital is a family-owned-and-operated business. The shop offers large format, digital and offset printing. The shop adds five new members to Local 14922.
AA Printing Service, in business since 2011, has established itself as a reliable print shop for Las Vegas residents and businesses as well as out-of-town business traveler in need of last minute printed materials. Owner John Pinnington says the he and his staff at AA Printing Service “are excited about the benefits, opportunity, and growth the union bug brings to the company.”
The shop adds four new members to the Local.
In 1988, Jack Chanin bought, Valley Press, a tiny print shop on Valley View Boulevard in Las Vegas. His daughter, Greta came on board years later. Greta started out at the bottom as a runner, and worked every job in the shop to learn every aspect of the business. Now owner of Valley Press, Greta has a deep understanding of every step involved in producing a superior finished product for each job. Valley Press adds four new members to Local 14922.
