Detroit Typographical Union (DTU) No. 18 (CWA #14503) was established in 1852 in conjunction with the establishment of the National Typographical Union (later known as the International Typographical Union or ITU). It's the oldest union local in the state of Michigan and one of the oldest in the country. Throughout its rich history the union has represented three major dailies: The Detroit News, The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit Times as well as suburban newspaper publications and non-newsprint publishers of the Detroit metropolitan area. The Printing, Publishing and Media Workers Sector of CWA now represents women and men in a diverse range of occupations in daily newspapers, commercial printing and mailing operations, graphic design, specialty manufacturing, publishing and distribution as well as the U. S. Government Printing Office.

PPMWS represents over 8,000 workers in a diverse range of occupations in daily newspapers, commercial printing and mailing operations, graphic design, specialty manufacturing, publishing and distribution as well as the U. S. Government Printing Office. Our union combines the proud heritage of the International Typographical Union-the oldest continuously operating union in America-with the dynamic vision of the Communications Workers of America. The combination of these two influences provides our members and their families with responsive representation and progressive programs.
